Hello! Iām Catherine, I am a creative and a mental health counselor based out of South Dakota. I integrate emotional processing and grounding skills to create original paintings and sketches. My mediums of choice include acrylic canvas paintings, colored or graphite still life, and storytelling through imagery. I occasionally dabble in graphic design, helping local small businesses update logos and clothing prints.
Art provides a unique outlet to walk a path of healing through creative expression. I believe in the neurological and somatic benefits of the arts. I believe creating is the vulnerable, political, and brave expression of the unique experience of being human. Art ensures that our stories will continue to be witnessed when we are no longer here to tell our stories ourselves. In the worst of times, creating is the rebellion that ensures we are never silenced.
Each piece begins with intentional reflection and grounding work. My original acrylic paintings are developed through a process of sitting with emotions and letting the somatic feelings determine the colors, shapes, and movement of the paint. My sketches are derived from micro-scenes captured from within a bigger picture ie:noticing one person laughing within a crowd or paying attention to the items, people, and critters that seem out of place.
My goal as an artist is to create art that bears witness to a journey of growth, change, and connection with a beautiful and challenging world.
